National Day of Awareness for Missing Indigenous Women

One Community Health marks the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls on May 5. The awareness campaign spotlights ongoing abductions and murders targeting Native women and girls. These tragedies are among the worst forms of violence against Native communities. In some reservations the murder rate of Native women is over ten times higher than the national average.

We Wear Red

May 5th is National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. The continuing reports of abductions and murders of Native women and girls represent one of the most horrific aspects of the spectrum of violence committed against Native women. It is estimated that on some reservations, the murder rate of Native women exceeds ten times the national average.

Domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, stalking, and sex trafficking are often involved in these disappearances or murders. As a symbol of solidarity and to raise awareness, we wear red in support of Native women and girls.
